Time to take a stand
I have been working on the border for fifteen years, reporting on the activities of Customs and Border Protection and searching for solutions. Throughout I have criticized things such as the Boeing virtual fence and failure of our government to live up to the promises of the Secure Fence Act of 2006.
This latest debacle over the construction of eight camera towers in and near the Coronado National Monument and Forest is the last straw. I have lost all patience.
At 9:30 AM, on Monday, March 6, I will hold a press conference at my ranch to protest these camera towers, and President Donald Trump's plan to build a solid wall on our border with Mexico. At that time I will explain my opposition to these towers and why I believe they are a waste of taxpayer money. I am not criticizing the company that is doing the work, I am criticizing our government for paying for them. I will explain my reasons for opposing this project on Monday.
I will also give my reasons for opposing plans to build a 30-ft solid concrete wall on the border. I am not opposed to fencing where it is appropriate, but I am opposed to structures that are dangerous for our U.S. Border Patrol and the environment.
I have long advocated the need for border accountability --- a way of knowing if Customs and Border Protection is doing the job called for by law. On Monday I will also demonstrate a system that can give us that accountability --- and much more.
The press conference will be held on my ranch within 200 feet of the Mexican border. It is safe because this stretch of the border (five miles) benefited from the installation of an effective fence.
Media interested in attending can call me at 520-266-3443, and/or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and I will provide a map including directions. The press conference will last about an hour.
I continue to support President Trump and I want to help him succeed in his sincere desire to secure our border.
PS: MSNBC is reporting that DHS has identified only $20 million for Pres. Trump's wall. -- They would have $170 million were it not for the eight Coronado camera towers.
